Gilmartin School

Summary:

Gilmartin School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Waterbury School District in Connecticut, with a diverse student population that is predominantly Hispanic (64.17% in 2022-2023).

Despite its low student-teacher ratio, Gilmartin School has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Connecticut, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years. In 2023-2024, only 13.7% of 3rd graders at Gilmartin were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 45.9% statewide and 24.9% in the Waterbury district. This underperformance is likely linked to the school's high percentage of students from low-income families (76.67% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch), which is significantly higher than the district average. When compared to nearby schools, such as Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School, Gilmartin School generally performs worse academically, suggesting that the challenges faced by the school may be addressable.

The consistent underperformance and racial and socioeconomic disparities at Gilmartin School indicate that the school may be facing challenges related to resource allocation, teacher quality, and student support services that contribute to its poor academic outcomes. While the school's low student-teacher ratio suggests a potential strength, the overall data points to the need for targeted interventions and support to address the underlying factors impacting student achievement at Gilmartin School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I cannot day enough about a handful of teacher in that school. They are amazing.

But administration, and many other teachers are not easy to work with. They teach and discipline in a cookie cutter fashion leaving no room for the creative child, and definitely no room for the concerned parent. As a parent I feel alienated, I feel I’m unable to speak up out of repercussions on my children. I’ve tried talking, meetings and going down town but in this city you get nowhere. I’m counting down the days until my children are out of the Waterbury school system. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
