B. W. Tinker School

Summary:

B. W. Tinker School is an elementary school in Waterbury, Connecticut, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. With a predominantly Hispanic student population, the school faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom quartile of Connecticut elementary schools.

B. W. Tinker School's proficiency rates on standardized tests are well below the state and Waterbury School District averages, particularly for certain student subgroups. The school's 1-star rating from SchoolDigger indicates below-average academic performance, which is likely exacerbated by the high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Nearby schools in the Waterbury district, such as Walsh School, Driggs School, and Wendell L. Cross School, also struggle academically, suggesting broader systemic issues within the district.

However, there are some bright spots in the Waterbury area, such as the Maloney Interdistrict Magnet School, which outperforms both the district and state averages on academic measures. Additionally, the Brass City Charter School, which is outside the Waterbury School District, also outperforms B. W. Tinker School and the district, particularly in the lower grades. These alternative educational models may provide valuable insights and strategies for improving student outcomes at B. W. Tinker School and throughout the Waterbury area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Weirdly enough I had a dream about my time in BW tinker school when I was in first and second grade. Honestly it was the best school I ever went to, the student to teacher ratio was fantastic and the environment was friendly and the teachers took their job seriously, and learning standards were very high. I still remember my first grade teachers name and the room that we were in as well as my second grade teacher. Very few schools have left a positive mark on me like BW Tinker School. My time there was almost 20 years ago, but I still have incredibly fond memories of it. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
