Tolland High School

Summary:

Tolland High School is a public high school serving grades 9-12 in Tolland, Connecticut, with a student population of 724. The school is part of the Tolland School District, which is ranked 37th out of 151 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Tolland High School consistently performs well academically, ranking among the top 25% of Connecticut high schools. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school had 70.8% of 11th-grade students proficient or better in SAT/English Language Arts, 59.5% in SAT/Math, and 64.7% in NGSS/Science, significantly higher than the state averages. The school also ranks exceptionally well for certain student subgroups, including low socioeconomic status students, where it ranks 7th out of 70 Connecticut high schools with a 5-star rating. However, the school's student population is predominantly white (82.32%), which is higher than nearby schools like Manchester High School and South Windsor High School.

Compared to nearby schools, Tolland High School outperforms many of its neighbors in terms of academic achievement, student subgroup performance, and overall school quality. The school's low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (13.4%) suggests a relatively affluent student population, which may contribute to its academic success. However, this also raises questions about the school's ability to serve students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, an area that may warrant further examination and consideration of strategies to promote a more inclusive and representative student body.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

EDUCATION & VICISSITUDES of the MARKETPLACE

I for one would want you to go one step further! Keep education out of ethics and morals, and give any parent far more control over the selection of schools, limiting only the distance covered by a school buss.

I am annoyed to be forced to pay twice for a primary education, both public and then private too!

Where does the state get such authority to force some of us to pay double, only to lower the cost for others. No other English “common law” country dopes that.

Any "separation of church and state is totally bogus! If I choose a parochial school, I have that right. So how does the state have right to make me pay for both? I must pay for one, either one, not both, both when my children attend school, and when they do not.

Having no rights and paying doth is outrageous and not American!

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
