Uncas Elementary School

Summary:

Uncas Elementary School is a public elementary school in Norwich, Connecticut, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade. With a diverse student population and a high percentage of students from low-income families, the school faces significant challenges in academic performance, consistently ranking in the bottom quartile of Connecticut elementary schools.

Uncas Elementary School's academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is significantly lower than state and district averages. In the 2022-2023 school year, only 23.8% of 3rd-grade students and 24.4% of 5th-grade students were proficient or better in SBAC/English Language Arts, compared to the state averages of 45.5% and 51.3%, respectively. The school's performance in SBAC/Mathematics and NGSS/Science is also well below the state averages. Interestingly, the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio and high per-student spending, suggesting that resources alone may not be the sole driver of academic success.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Samuel Huntington School, Thomas W. Mahan School, and Integrated Day Charter School, Uncas Elementary School's academic performance is consistently lower, with these nearby schools having higher proficiency rates in core subject areas. The nearby schools with higher academic performance also tend to have lower percentages of students from low-income families, suggesting a correlation between socioeconomic status and academic achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The absolute worst school system I have ever seen. When I was a kid I came up through Norwich Public Schools and I have to say their standard has dropped around 99.99999999999999999999999999999%!! If you are a parent who is considering moving to Norwich and are generally concerned for your child's education or safety I would say run as far away as you can!!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
