Cranbury Elementary School

Summary:

Cranbury Elementary School is a public elementary school in Norwalk, Connecticut, serving 419 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school stands out for its diverse student population, strong academic performance, and lower student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools.

Cranbury Elementary consistently outperforms the Norwalk School District and the state of Connecticut in standardized test scores, with 50.7% of its 3rd-grade students scoring proficient or better in ELA, compared to 37.6% for the district and 45.9% for the state. The school also has a lower student-teacher ratio of 11.6, which may contribute to its academic success. However, Cranbury lags behind the high-performing schools in the neighboring Westport and Wilton districts, such as Coleytown Elementary School and Miller-Driscoll School.

Cranbury Elementary School serves a more diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (36.75%) and African American (9.79%) students compared to nearby schools. The school also has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (36.75%), indicating a larger proportion of students from low-income families. While Cranbury's consistent academic performance suggests it is effectively supporting its diverse student population, the school's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 146 out of 557 Connecticut elementary schools in 2012-2013 to 251 out of 497 in 2023-2024. By leveraging its strengths and learning from the best practices of neighboring high-performing schools, Cranbury Elementary can continue to provide a high-quality education to its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As a parent with two small children (one with an iep), I am thankful for everything Cranbury elementary has done for my children. The teachers and therapists are experienced and nurturing. The environment is one that will no doubt leave a lasting positive impression on my children. The active PTO has done a fantastic job raising funds, which have outfitted smart boards in several of the classrooms and the library. My son, who had many challenges and struggled every morning in his prior school experiences now looks forward to every day at Cranbury school. He loves the online reading and math supplemental programs he accesses at home from any device and is reading way beyond his grade level. He is friends with children from a diverse array of backgrounds. This has given him a more worldly perspective within the settings of the quaint typically American looking schoolhouse. The energy of the new administration is infectious and the positive actions they have set in place already make me proud to be a parent here at Cranbury elementary school! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
