King/Robinson Magnet School

Summary:

King/Robinson Magnet School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the New Haven School District, with a diverse student population of 418 as of the 2022-2023 school year. However, the school faces significant challenges, consistently ranking among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Connecticut.

Despite its magnet school status and a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 11.5, King/Robinson Magnet School struggles academically, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics that are significantly below the state and district averages. The school has a very high percentage of students from low-income families, with 79.9% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. In contrast, nearby magnet schools like Mauro-Sheridan Magnet School and Celentano BioTech Health and Medical Magnet School perform significantly better on standardized tests and have higher rankings within the state.

The school's challenges extend beyond academic performance, with a high percentage of African American and Hispanic students and significant racial disparities in their performance compared to their peers in the state and district. Despite being a magnet school, King/Robinson Magnet School has consistently performed poorly over the past decade, with its statewide ranking fluctuating between 455 and 533 out of over 500 elementary schools in Connecticut. Addressing the root causes of the school's underperformance, such as targeted interventions and support for struggling subgroups, may be necessary to drive meaningful improvements.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Since enrolling my first child at King/Robinson, I have been throughly pleased with the school and the curriculum they provide. I now have both my children in the school and they both are in the French Immersion Program. They are challenged each day so that they don't ever feel bored or lose interest in what they are learning. My husband and I also love that they are learning how to be active and knowledgeable members of their local and global communities. I give this school 5 stars hands down. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
