Killingly High School

Summary:

Killingly High School is a public high school located in Dayville, Connecticut, serving 788 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Killingly School District, which is ranked 131 out of 158 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Killingly High School faces several challenges, including lower academic performance compared to the state average. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 51.9% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better in SAT/English Language Arts, and only 11.7% were proficient or better in SAT/Math, significantly lower than the state averages. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with the school ranking in the bottom quartile of Connecticut high schools for white students and special education students. Additionally, Killingly High School has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 43.27%, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

Compared to nearby high schools, such as E.O. Smith High School and The Woodstock Academy, which rank significantly higher in the state, Killingly High School's performance is generally lower. This suggests that the school may be struggling to keep up with the academic standards of its peers. Additionally, Killingly High School's student-teacher ratio has fluctuated in recent years, ranging from 11 to 14 students per teacher, which is generally higher than that of some nearby schools, potentially indicating a need for additional staffing resources to support student learning.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As a parent of a child who attends KHS, I quickly realized the staff to student ratio is alarming aproxamately 860 students to 56 staff members. The students run the school. Many things are swept under the rug here. To the point where my family has to pack up and move to get our childeren a better educaton. The graduation rate is low very low. The board blames it on the budget vote not being passed, however they managed to build a brand new school and hand out new ipads!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
