Bear Path School

Summary:

Bear Path School is an elementary school in Hamden, Connecticut, serving 406 students from kindergarten to 6th grade as part of the Hamden School District.

Bear Path School consistently outperforms the Hamden School District and the state of Connecticut in academic assessments, with higher percentages of students proficient or better in SBAC/English Language Arts and SBAC/Mathematics across all grade levels. The school also has exceptional performance for its special education and low socioeconomic status student populations, ranking 5th out of 371 and 2nd out of 302 Connecticut elementary schools, respectively, in the 2020-2021 school year. While Bear Path School maintains a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger, nearby schools like Green Acres Elementary School and Spring Glen School have even higher academic achievement and statewide rankings.

The school's racial composition has shifted, with a decrease in the percentage of white students and an increase in the percentage of Hispanic and two or more races students. This change may have implications for the school's programming and support services. Additionally, Bear Path School's relatively high spending per student (around $20,000 per student) and low student-teacher ratio may contribute to its strong academic performance, but the school also serves a significant population of students from low-income families, which could present unique challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My kids have been in the HPS system for about 6 years at Bear Path. I have got to say that the school has gone down hill. Don't get me wrong the teachers and the Nurse are great. Its the Principal and the other staff that brings the school down. Bending over backwards and giving in to every complaint. I would have more respect for Him if he had a set of balls and stood up to the ?entitled parents. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
