North Street School

Summary:

North Street School is an exemplary elementary school located in Greenwich, Connecticut, serving 387 students in grades PK-5. As part of the highly-ranked Greenwich School District, North Street School consistently delivers outstanding academic performance, ranking among the top elementary schools in the state.

North Street School's academic excellence is evident in its 5-star rating from SchoolDigger and its statewide ranking of 26 out of 497 schools. The school's proficiency rates significantly exceed state and district averages, with a particularly diverse student population compared to nearby schools like Stillmeadow School and Westover School in the Stamford School District. Additionally, North Street School boasts a low student-teacher ratio of 11:1, which likely contributes to its exceptional academic outcomes.

While North Street School's student population is predominantly white, it has a more diverse racial makeup compared to some of its neighbors, with notable percentages of Hispanic and Asian students. This diversity may foster a more inclusive and enriching learning environment. However, the stark contrast in free and reduced lunch rates between North Street School and nearby schools like Hamilton Avenue School suggests significant socioeconomic disparities within the Greenwich School District, highlighting the need for continued efforts to ensure equitable access to high-quality education for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Thrilled with the school, quality and manner of teaching, and community. What other elementary school gives parents an option to send their child to school half an hour early for Chinese five days a week? Close Quote

Open Quote There is a great community at this school. Parent are very involved and supportive of the teachers and the new principal. It seems like our son is progressing every week, bringing something new home for us to discuss and debate. At our first PTA, I was surprise at how detailed the teacher was in describing our son's strengths, and actions she was taking to address areas where he could improve. It felt more like a personal tutor that a teacher with 12 kids in the class. We are impressed with our son's development there. Close Quote

Open Quote Once a jewel, this school has rested on it's laurels for many years and poor leadership has consigned it to mediocrity. Persistent failure to address problem teachers, poor communication with parents, lack of transparency, refusal to acknowledge and address poor results and critical policy failures make for an uncertain future. Although the glory of the Greenwich Public Schools have faded in general, there are still far better choices in the district than North Street. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
