New Lebanon School

Summary:

New Lebanon School is an elementary school in Greenwich, Connecticut, serving 336 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Greenwich School District, which is ranked 32 out of 158 districts in the state.

New Lebanon School stands out for its significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (60.42%) compared to nearby schools like Old Greenwich School and Riverside School, which have majority white student populations. While the school's overall academic performance, as measured by SBAC test scores, is lower than these high-performing neighbors, it excels in supporting certain student subgroups. In recent years, New Lebanon School has ranked among the top Connecticut elementary schools for Hispanic, special education, and low-income students.

The school's high free and reduced lunch rate (60-68%) and low student-teacher ratio (7.5 to 9.7) suggest that socioeconomic factors and resource allocation may play a significant role in student outcomes. The stark contrast between New Lebanon School's performance and that of nearby schools like North Mianus School, which have proficiency rates around 80-90%, highlights the need to further investigate the factors contributing to these differences and explore ways to improve outcomes at New Lebanon School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I've been a parent at New Lebanon for 3 years and it has been a wonderful experience. We have a large percent of hispanic students who require ESL which may be a reflection of the scores and responsibility should be placed on the parents to make sure that the children have the right tools. I believe the no child left behind policy is harming more kids than not. If a child is not ready to move on and does not meet the requirements they should repeat the grade to ensure they are on track and not holding others back. Close Quote

Open Quote Small neighborhood school in the process of becoming a magnet school with the IB theme. Great staff and excellent support staff. Diverse student population. Test scores tend to be on the low side due to high (43%) ESL learners.

I've had experience with both SPED and Advanced children and was very happy with their education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
