University of Hartford Magnet School

Summary:

University of Hartford Magnet School is an elementary school in West Hartford, Connecticut that serves 510 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school has a predominantly African American (49.41%) and Hispanic (26.08%) student population, and a high percentage (62.35%) of students from low-income families.

Despite the school's significant resources, including high per-student spending and a low student-teacher ratio, University of Hartford Magnet School has consistently underperformed academically compared to the state and its own district. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 33.8% of 3rd graders, 24.2% of 4th graders, and 40% of 5th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, and the school's performance in Math was similarly low. The school's ranking of 375 out of 497 Connecticut elementary schools places it in the bottom 25% of the state, and it has maintained a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for several years.

When compared to nearby schools, the academic disparities become even more apparent. For example, Aiken School, located just 1.72 miles away, has significantly higher academic performance, with 77.3% of 3rd graders, 75.8% of 4th graders, and 75.6% of 5th graders reaching proficiency in ELA, and 74.2%, 73.8%, and 80.8% reaching proficiency in Math, respectively. Aiken School also has a much lower percentage of students from low-income families (12.77%) and a higher overall ranking (57 out of 497 schools). These comparisons highlight the need for targeted interventions to address the racial and socioeconomic disparities in educational outcomes at University of Hartford Magnet School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Our son has been attending this school for the past four years. What the school did for our son is nothing short of a miracle. Before UHMS, he was going from school to school looking for the right one for him. We finally found him a home at UHMS. The school was an eye opener for us. They taught us that a school environment can make all the difference in a child's development. He was diagnosed with ADHD when he was very young. From the first day he started school, they took amazing care of him. As parents, we know how difficult it is to manage a child like my son. Every one at school was very patient and understanding. They worked very hard to bridge the gap so that he can be where he is today. My son is now excelling academically. We are so proud of him and we owe it to UHMS. We would like to thank Principal Tim Barber and the entire UHMS team for knowing and understanding my son the way they do. Their dedication is visible daily in the way they interact with each student. UHMS is a very respectful and compassionate environment. We also want to congratulate any parents who choose UHMS and the lucky students that get accepted to this exceptional academic institution. We find the staff in this school to be better than most private and public schools we’ve come across in the 58 years of combined academic career. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
