Black Rock School

Summary:

Black Rock School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, a district that ranks 152 out of 158 in the state and has a 0-star rating. With a student population of 445, the school has a predominantly Hispanic (58.65%) and White (26.74%) student body.

Academically, Black Rock School consistently underperforms compared to state and district averages on standardized tests. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in SBAC/English Language Arts ranged from 48.8% in 6th and 8th grades, compared to the state averages of 48.1% and 49.1%. In SBAC/Mathematics, the school's proficiency rates were much lower, ranging from 19% in 3rd grade to 34.9% in 6th grade, compared to the state averages of 51.3% and 41.4%. Additionally, Black Rock School has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Connecticut elementary schools, with a 1-star or 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. However, the school performs better relative to other Connecticut schools when looking at specific student subgroups, such as Hispanic students, special education students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Compared to nearby schools in the Bridgeport School District, Black Rock School generally outperforms them academically, particularly in English Language Arts. But when compared to higher-performing schools in the Fairfield School District, such as Sherman School, the academic gap is significant. The school's per-student spending and student-teacher ratio suggest a need for more resources and support to improve outcomes for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
