Metropolitan Arts Academy

Summary:

Metropolitan Arts Academy is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Westminster Public Schools district in Denver, Colorado, with a student population of 345 and a predominantly Hispanic student body (80.87% in 2022-2023).

Despite its location in Denver, Metropolitan Arts Academy has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Colorado elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger in recent years. The school significantly underperforms the state and district averages on CMAS assessments across all grade levels and subject areas, with only 15.6% of students proficient or better in CMAS Math and 31.7% in CMAS English Language Arts, compared to state averages of 34.2% and 44.1%, respectively. The school's high rate of free/reduced-price lunch recipients, at 77.68% in 2022-2023, indicates a high concentration of economically disadvantaged students.

When compared to nearby schools, the academic performance gap is stark. For example, Colorado STEM Academy, a public magnet school just 1.45 miles away, outperforms Metropolitan Arts Academy by a wide margin, with 47.9% of students proficient or better in CMAS Math and 52.5% in CMAS English Language Arts. This consistent underperformance suggests that Metropolitan Arts Academy may be facing systemic challenges that have not been adequately addressed, and the high percentage of economically disadvantaged students likely plays a significant role in the school's academic struggles.

Open Quote I attended school there a long time ago and the memories they left with me were horrible. There was this one teacher name Mrs. Bereans, she was really harsh and mean especially toward me for some reason. I would apologize to her and she would reply, "Sorry doesn't cut it!". It was so horrible. Not only that but when I couldn't pay for my lunch, they gave me a choice of eating crackers and chesse or nothing at all. That's not right because at the time I was just 7 yrs-old. How can someone do that to a child? My advise would be to just find a better school. This school is not a school for childern. This school is full of people who just want to boss and make a child's self-esteem lower. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
