Jefferson County Open Elementary School

Summary:

Jefferson County Open Elementary School is a public elementary school in Lakewood, Colorado, serving 239 students from pre-kindergarten to 6th grade. The school is part of the Jefferson County School District No. R-1, which is ranked 35th out of 116 districts in the state.

While the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, it has struggled academically compared to the district and state averages. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in CMAS tests were lower than the district and state in both English Language Arts and Math across all grade levels. This is in contrast to nearby schools like Dennison Elementary School, which ranked 3rd out of 943 Colorado elementary schools. Additionally, the school has a predominantly white student population, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools that have much more diverse student populations.

The school's academic struggles and lack of racial diversity raise questions about the factors contributing to its underperformance and the potential implications for the educational experiences of its students. The growing percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 31.22% in 2020-2021 to 38.49% in 2022-2023, also suggests a need for additional support and resources to address the needs of students from lower-income families. Overall, the data suggests that Jefferson County Open Elementary School faces several challenges that may require a closer examination of the school's practices and the broader educational landscape in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have been incredibly impressed with the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of the staff at the Open School. My son is in the elementary program and those teachers are top-notch! You can find them presenting at conferences nation wide! When considering schools for our son, I observed the classrooms of numerous (13) schools, from gifted programs to Montessori, across three districts, and did not see anything that even compared to the experience provided each student at the Jeffco Open School. Each student was considered as if he/she was the teachers sole student! Of course, I considered test scores. When looking further into performance, I was delighted to see the high percentage of students (in the 90%) that went on to attend 4 year universities. Further, many students play sports on the teams of neighboring high schools (Lake for example). If I had to sum up the Open School, so far it has been; academic achievement coupled with love of learning (as a life-long interest), personal responsibility and self-directedness. The older students mentor the younger students, they are starting a huge garden program, and the experience is unmatched. What an amazing place to grow up (and be a parent of a student)! About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
