Lakewood High School

Summary:

Lakewood High School is a public high school serving grades 9-12 in Lakewood, Colorado, with a total enrollment of 1,885 students. The school is part of the Jefferson County School District No. R-1, which is ranked 35 out of 116 school districts in Colorado and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Lakewood High School stands out for its relatively diverse student population, with 49.5% White, 37.56% Hispanic, and 4.83% Asian students. Academically, the school has consistently ranked in the top 100 Colorado high schools, with strong performance on standardized tests like the SAT and PSAT. However, the school's performance for Hispanic and Low Socioeconomic Status students is relatively lower, ranking in the 100s out of Colorado high schools. Lakewood High School also has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch compared to nearby Wheat Ridge High School, but lower than Jefferson Junior/Senior High School.

While Lakewood High School generally outperforms nearby schools like McLain Community High School and Jefferson Junior/Senior High School, its statewide ranking has declined from 66 out of 411 schools in 2018-2019 to 99 out of 349 schools in 2023-2024. This suggests the school may need to focus on addressing achievement gaps between different racial and socioeconomic groups to ensure equitable outcomes for all students and maintain its competitive edge among the top-performing high schools in Colorado.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote It was the best decision I have ever made to drive from my hometown of Evergreen to attend the IB program at Lakewood High School. The students are diverse and friendly, while the faculty are amazing teachers. Lakewood is excellent preparation for college. I have several friends attending or receiving scholarships from Stanford and others attending prestigious colleges such as Yale. I myself hope to attend Vanderbilt. Lakewood also has a lot of school pride and spirit. I highly recommend this school! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
