Jefferson Junior/Senior High School

Summary:

Jefferson Junior/Senior High School is a public high school located in Edgewater, Colorado, serving grades 7-12 with a total enrollment of 612 students. The school is part of the Jefferson County School District No. R-1, which is ranked 35 out of 116 school districts in Colorado and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite being part of a relatively high-performing school district, Jefferson Junior/Senior High School has consistently struggled academically, ranking in the bottom 25% of Colorado high schools with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's academic performance is significantly below the state and district averages across various standardized tests, with only 7.2% of students proficient or better in CMAS English Language Arts, compared to the district average of 51.8% and the state average of 44.1%. This persistent academic challenge is likely exacerbated by the school's high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 90.2% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the district and state averages.

While Jefferson Junior/Senior High School has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 15.5 students per teacher, this potential strength has not yet translated into improved academic outcomes. The school's struggles stand in contrast to several nearby high-performing schools, such as Wheat Ridge High School and Lakewood High School, which are part of the same school district but significantly outperform Jefferson Junior/Senior High School. Addressing the unique challenges facing this school will require a comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of the disparities and provides targeted support to the school's students and community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote would give this HS 0/5 stars if possible. schooldigger has this spot on, poor in academics; even worse in classroom etiquette from visit as guest teacher. A disgrace to all of the other fine schools within the Jeffco district in state of CO. Avoid sending your child here if at all possible. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
