Atlas Preparatory High School

Summary:

Atlas Preparatory High School is a public charter high school serving 479 students in grades 9-12 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The school is part of the Harrison School District No. 2, which is ranked 72 out of 116 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating.

Atlas Preparatory High School stands out for its significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (86.01%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 22.74% to 55.76% Hispanic. Additionally, the school has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 90.62% to 91.58% over the past 3 years, much higher than the surrounding schools. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates on standardized tests, is generally lower than the nearby James Irwin Charter High School and The Vanguard School (High), which also serve the Colorado Springs area.

The data analysis suggests that the challenges faced by Atlas Preparatory High School, such as the socioeconomic and academic performance gaps, may be systemic within the broader Harrison School District No. 2. While the school's 3-star rating in 2022-2023 indicates potential for improvement, addressing these disparities will be crucial for enhancing educational opportunities and outcomes for the students at Atlas Preparatory High School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I worked at this school and I must say, I was horrified by what I saw here. Not only were teachers shuffled around yearly (though many moved quarterly) from subject to subject with little or no notice, the behavior management model borders on emotionally abusive. Students have little to no voice at this school. God forbid you have special needs: special education teachers are given caseloads of over 30 students and zero support at the beginning of the year. Compliance has been a huge issue at this school and caused the special education staff to turnover more than any other group (5 special ed staff resigned, leaving 2 teachers for most of the year). This means that students are underserved, especially when you consider the level of need many of these students have. Students are losing academic ground at this school. Students who started the year a grade level behind end two years behind: this is due to the fact that teachers aren't usually teaching in the subject they're best educated in, are given little to no support, and have to navigate quarterly changes to the daily schedule, curriculum, and content areas with little to no warning. As for the "enrichment" the school boasts, it is not enrichment. I witnessed many teachers trying to create good content (music teachers who tried to teach music with no instruments, no practice space, etc, to cheerleading coaches who spent hours planning cheers), but the program isn't structured at all. This meant that many days students spent their "enrichment" time watching movies or running around outside. Because teachers had no time to plan for their "enrichment" blocks, students suffered. They need to triple their teaching staff, change their controlling behavior management system, actually offer professional development to teachers, and invest in more substantive educational tools and practice to benefit their students rather than spending money on "report cards for teachers" (teachers get massive $ bonuses based on their "report card"). As a teacher, I didn't join this work expecting to make a ton of money: I did it because I love children and want to help them be the best people they can be. They throw money at their teachers, hoping to financially entice them to stay rather than offering a positive work environment, professional support, and a truly kid-focused environment. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
