Hanover Junior-Senior High School

Summary:

Hanover Junior-Senior High School is a public school serving grades 6-12 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with a relatively small student population of 156 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school stands out in several key ways compared to nearby schools in the area.

Hanover Junior-Senior High School has a significantly higher percentage of white students (53.85%) compared to the more diverse student populations at nearby schools like Widefield High School and Discovery High School. However, the school's academic performance is a concern, with consistently lower test scores than the state and district averages across assessments like CMAS, SAT, and PSAT. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's proficiency rates in CMAS English Language Arts (25.5%) and PSAT9 Mathematics (17%) were significantly below the state averages of 44.1% and 40%, respectively.

Another notable factor is Hanover Junior-Senior High School's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 67.86% to 72.9% over the past three school years. This is much higher than the nearby schools, indicating a higher proportion of economically disadvantaged students. The school also has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12.1 to 16.4 over the past three school years, which is lower than the nearby schools. These factors may be contributing to the school's academic challenges and highlight the unique needs of its student population.

Open Quote Hanover MS/Hs doesn't care that my boy is being bullied in a NO TOLERANCE school, would help me get the problem stopped or kick the abusing student out after other parents have complained. They even had a teacher calling kids stupid in thier class. I know this is a poverty stricken district but that is no excuse for abusing the students. Other child in elementary is doing great, with wonderful staff. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
