Skyview Academy

Summary:

Skyview Academy is a public charter school located in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, serving grades PK-12 with a total enrollment of 1,273 students. The school is part of the Douglas County School District No. Re 1, which is ranked 5th out of 116 districts in Colorado and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Skyview Academy stands out as a high-performing school, with consistently high four-year graduation rates ranging from 92.5% to 96.7% over the past four school years, significantly higher than the state and district averages. The school also has very low dropout rates, ranging from 0.0% to 0.4% over the past three school years. In terms of test scores, Skyview Academy outperforms the state and district averages in several key areas, including CMAS/Science for 8th grade, CMAS/English Language Arts for All Grades, and SAT/Reading and Writing for 11th Grade. However, the school underperforms the district in CMAS/Math for All Grades. Skyview Academy has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 14.9 to 15.4 over the past three school years, which is lower than the district average.

Compared to nearby schools, Vanguard Classical School - East, Aurora Central Campus, and Lotus School for Excellence in the Aurora district have significantly lower test scores and graduation rates than Skyview Academy and STEM School Highlands Ranch, another high-performing public charter school in the same district. Skyview Academy also has a relatively low percentage of free and reduced lunch recipients, suggesting it may serve a more affluent student population compared to some nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am a current sophomore at Skyview and I have to say that this school is going downhill. If you are considering going there or your child is, please read my concerns even though there is a lot. Before my freshman year I was super excited to attend this school as it was labeled as a school that is focused on helping you grow as a student with plenty of resources to help you, along with more of a relationship with your teacher. Now coming from years of huge public schools I was super excited for this oppurtunity to attend such an amazing school. Now starting at the school I felt pretty good, I was excited and I was even involved with after school activities before starting at the school. But, within my first week I noticed my first issue, which was the type of people in the school. The school was probably 90 white race and very religious individuals. Which was fine at the time, it didn't bother me at all. But after a while some people came out as gay or said that they weren't religious, and this created a huge issue. Many kids bullied these people and one of my friends was concerned for their own safety due to individuals at this school threatening to "kill all gays" and also students not liking other students due to them being non religious. The counselors did nothing about the killing threats!! Another issue is racism. Many students make fun of and stereotype the small portion of different ethnicities at this school. For example, an African American student at my school gets in trouble a lot and many students specifically say it's because he's black. Also the non white population is discriminated by students but that's hard to explain without someone seeing it first-hand. Second of all, the teachers. Freshman year wasn't terrible with teachers, I had issues with not learning things in class but I worked hard and didnt think it was a big deal. Now this year (sophomore year) is terrible. Within the first 3 weeks I went to the counslers because I was getting quizzes and tests on subjects not covered in my classes (yes I have proof, I'm not a lazy student and I take lots of notes) So after a long conversation with my counselor they came up with the solution that I needed to talk to my teachers about it and that other concerns (in which a teacher called her students stupid) would be dealt with. Currently, in each class I have my own issues. Chemistry: This teacher constantly calls us cheaters, does not teach content that is asked of us on tests, and is not willing to admit he is wrong. History: Lazy teacher (but a cool person), just gives notes/no interactive activities for hands on learners, and basically expects us to know everything From a set of notes which works well for some people but is similar to chemistry. Geometry: this teacher treats us like second graders, but seems okay. I'm pretty good at math so I understand the concept on my own but again, like my other classes I'm required to learn on my own. Literature: well basically this class is all busywork, and there's not much writing skills involved but this teacher really has in depth conversations with us about personal character and loves poetry. Not too many complaints about this teacher. One thing that gives this school its amazing ability is the arts program along with the amazing opportunity to learn sign language. They have loving staff (spefically in these programs) and these programs are probably the only things I like about this school. But, I suggest you don't attend this school if you truly care about your education because it has false advertising, and based on my experience should not be rated as highly as it is. (Also an example of the false advertising, this school is not a great college prep. school because it does not teach you how to get in to college or provide opportunities to take college classes while your in school like tons of other schools do.) I will not be attending this school next year due to poor qualities of education along with the student population. If you have any questions I'd love to answer them (unless this is anonymous). Anyways, please consider this review before the school takes it down!!! Thank you for your time! :) Close Quote

Open Quote This data shows that SkyView Academy's elementary test scores are down by 20 and their middle school scores are down by 10. This is no surprise since 3/4 of the teachers have turned over, along with the entire administrative team. No one in the current administration has a proven record of leading an effective school in fact, if you look at their history, you will find the complete opposite. At one time, this school had potential. Sadly, they are headed in the wrong direction. Close Quote

Open Quote SkyView Academy lacks leadership. The current Director's previous school failed both financially and academically, and SkyView is also declining rapidly. The Elementary Principal was let go from her previous position for poor job performance. My kids' academics declined significantly in the few years that they attended SkyView. I wish I would have never enrolled my kids in SkyView. We are much happier in our current school. Close Quote

Open Quote This is a great PK-12 school that offers researched-based curriculum in a very safe, nurturing environment. Our children have been attending since the school opened in 2010. In addition, our children have chosen to stay at SkyView for their high school program because of the caliber of teachers, smaller class sizes, focus on character, service, Classical education and college prep. I highly recommend checking out their website, taking a tour and encouraging incoming high school or current high school students to sign up for a shadow day! Close Quote

Open Quote SkyView Academy is actually a PK-12 public charter school, not PK-6. The name is also spelled SkyView Academy, not Skyview. The correct phone number is 303-471-8439
the website is www.skyviewacademy.k12.co.us
It would be wonderful if you could update this information.

Our children have attended this school for all 3 years it has been open so far, and are thriving in this school choice environment. The curriculum is full and interesting. The students map scores show consistent growth in all subject matters and the staff works hard to assure true success in the students learning. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
