Denver Center for International Studies

Summary:

Denver Center for International Studies is a public magnet high school serving grades 6-12 in Denver, Colorado, with a diverse student population that is majority Hispanic. While the school has seen a decline in its statewide ranking and rating in recent years, it continues to face challenges in academic performance, particularly in standardized test scores and the performance of various student subgroups.

The school's statewide ranking has fallen from as high as 30th out of 255 Colorado high schools in 2015-2016 to 241st out of 349 high schools in 2023-2024, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Its performance on standardized tests, such as CMAS and SAT, is generally lower than the state and School District No. 1 averages, with only 12.3% of students proficient or better in CMAS Math, compared to 34.2% statewide and 31.2% in the district. The school's performance on various student subgroups, such as female students, male students, Hispanic students, and low socioeconomic status students, is also lower than the state and district averages.

When compared to nearby schools in the same district, Denver Center for International Studies generally performs worse on key metrics like test scores and statewide rankings. For example, DSST: Cedar High School, located about 1.1 miles away, ranked 52nd out of 349 Colorado high schools in 2023-2024 and had significantly higher test scores than Denver Center for International Studies. The school's diverse student population and high percentage of low-income students, as indicated by the free and reduced lunch rates, may be contributing factors to its academic performance, and the school may need to implement targeted strategies to address these challenges and improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter is presently an 8th grader at DCIS. To say her experience since 6th grade has been transformative would be an understatement. She has thrived in an environment that encourages creativity, student voice and a fluency in cultural and global issues. The school did struggle over the past few years as it transitioned from an all-application school to an open enrollment school, but this year is going great and my daughter couldn't be more thrilled with her teachers and her classes and the amazing clubs and activities she is able to experience. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
