Highline Academy Southeast

Summary:

Highline Academy Southeast is a public charter elementary and middle school serving grades K-8 in Denver, Colorado, with a diverse student population of over 600 students.

Highline Academy Southeast consistently outperforms the Denver Public Schools district and the state of Colorado on standardized tests, with 61% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 40.2% in Math, compared to 40.7% and 31.2% for the district, respectively. The school particularly excels for certain student subgroups, ranking 3rd out of 18 Colorado elementary schools for African American students and 125th out of 365 for low socioeconomic status students in ELA proficiency. Highline Academy Southeast also maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 11.4 to 13 over the past three years, which is lower than many nearby schools like Place Bridge Academy and Holly Hills Elementary School.

While Highline Academy Southeast outperforms the district and state, there is still room for improvement, particularly in Science proficiency, which lags behind ELA and Math. Additionally, the school's performance, while strong, has declined slightly in recent years, from a high of 4 stars in 2018-2019 and 2021-2022 to 3 stars in the most recent school year. Overall, Highline Academy Southeast appears to be a high-performing public charter school that is providing a quality education to a diverse student population in Denver.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter has had a excellent experience at this school. The teachers and other staff are caring and very communicative. I always know what is going on in the classroom, what the homework is, what work is not complete and other information. The school requires 40 hours of volunteer time per year for a married couple but has ample opportunities to help out. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
