Hamilton Middle School

Summary:

Hamilton Middle School is a public middle school in Denver, Colorado, serving 646 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the School District No. 1, which is ranked 78 out of 116 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hamilton Middle School faces significant challenges, with its student population being notably more diverse than nearby schools. While 47.68% of students are Hispanic and 20.28% are African American, the school's academic performance, as measured by CMAS test scores, is significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 14.3% of Hamilton students were proficient or better in CMAS Math, compared to 31.2% for the district and 34.2% for the state. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Colorado middle schools, and its performance has been declining over the past several years.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Grant Beacon Middle School, which is in the same district, Hamilton Middle School's academic performance is significantly lower. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students (65.79% in 2022-2023) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a relatively high proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. These factors suggest that the school may need to focus on addressing the unique needs of its diverse student population and the challenges related to poverty and its impact on student learning and achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I've been very pleased with our experience at Hamilton so far. My daughter loves it and she's doing well academically. I love fact that they're becoming an IB accredited school and all the emphasis they place on the IB learner profile, holding scholars to high academic standards and attitudes. I like the teachers and admin staff I've interacted with. Sports teams are great and they do great academic assemblies like inviting prominent authors to speak. Overall I feel positive about Hamilton and I believe it's on the up and up, compared to past years that were apparently a low point. Close Quote

Open Quote I am now in college, but I went to Hamilton. I did not like the school. The environment was weird, it was the only school I was ever bullied in, and the disparity between TAP and IPM was enormous.

If I had to do it again, I would not go here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
