Cory Elementary School

Summary:

Cory Elementary School is a highly-rated public elementary school in Denver, Colorado, serving around 400 students from grades 1 to 5. This exceptional institution has consistently ranked among the top elementary schools in the state, earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for several years.

Cory Elementary School significantly outperforms the School District No. 1 and state averages in academic proficiency, with 75.8% of students proficient or better in CMAS/English Language Arts and 77.3% proficient or better in CMAS/Math. The school also boasts a relatively diverse student population, with 70% White, 10% Hispanic, 5.25% Asian, and 3.25% African American students. Additionally, Cory has a strong Gifted and Talented program, ranking 12th out of 91 Colorado elementary schools in this category, and a relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at 14.75%.

While Cory Elementary School outperforms the district and state, it is interesting to compare it to nearby schools like Slavens K-8 School and Creativity Challenge Community, which also deliver exceptional academic results. This suggests that there are pockets of excellence within the Denver Public School District. Additionally, Cory's relatively low percentage of free/reduced lunch recipients compared to some nearby schools, such as Ellis Elementary, indicates that the school may serve a more affluent student population, which could be a factor in its high academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The 2020 school year was the most challenging by far because of district wide school closures and my children having to learn from home. Without the support of the wonderful Cory Elementary staff and community I don’t think we would have persevered. Even with months of online learning and ongoing changes my children still thrived. My children are now beyond thrilled to be back in the classroom where they belong and love the in-person collaboration with their peers and teachers. Cory Elementary is a wonderful neighborhood elementary experience for kids from academics to peer relationships. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
