Wilson Elementary School

Summary:

Wilson Elementary School is a public elementary school in Colorado Springs, Colorado, serving 363 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Colorado Springs School District No. 11, which is ranked 66 out of 116 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Wilson Elementary stands out for several key reasons. It has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (65.01%) compared to nearby schools like Monroe Elementary (29.13%) and Madison Elementary (53.89%). Academically, Wilson consistently underperforms the district and state in CMAS test scores, with only 20.1% of students proficient in English Language Arts compared to 37.5% for the district and 44.1% for Colorado. The school has been ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Colorado elementary schools for several years, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Wilson Elementary also has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 75.72% to 84.02%, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. This, combined with the school's racial makeup and low academic performance, suggests that Wilson may be facing unique challenges that its neighboring schools, such as Penrose Elementary and Monroe Elementary, do not experience to the same degree. Addressing these issues will likely require a comprehensive, long-term approach to support the needs of Wilson's students and community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The teachers here are great and the support staff is wonderful. Keep in mind that parenting responsibilities don't end when you drop off your kids in the morning. We've had 6 kids go though Wilson and I believe they were all successful because of the equal amount of work we put in as parents in conjunction with the staff. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
