Roosevelt Charter Academy

Summary:

Roosevelt Charter Academy is an elementary school located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, serving 420 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Colorado Springs School District No. 11, which has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 10.5 students per teacher, Roosevelt Charter Academy consistently ranks in the bottom quarter of Colorado elementary schools, receiving a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's academic performance lags behind the district and state averages in all CMAS assessments, with only 17.9% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 14.5% in Math, compared to 37.5% and 29.3% in the district, respectively. The school's performance is particularly low for its female, male, and Hispanic student subgroups, ranking in the bottom quarter of Colorado elementary schools for these groups.

When compared to nearby elementary schools, such as Henry Elementary School and Sand Creek International School, Roosevelt Charter Academy consistently underperforms on academic measures. The high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds (82.14% free or reduced-price lunch recipients) likely contributes to the school's academic challenges, and targeted interventions may be necessary to address the unique needs of its predominantly Hispanic student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote 30-35 students in each k-3 classroom, not 17 per classroom teacher. A formula for the student:teacher ratio is based on TOTAL number of licensed staff...don't be fooled, the CLASS SIZES ARE HUGE! Most of the students are Hispanic with many who are very low academically, due to limited experience with English. This fact combined with enormous class size leaves little time or ability for teachers to meet each student's academic needs. Generally the staff cares about kids, but 700 k-5 students in one school with only 24 classroom teachers is unrealistic. Because RECS is a for-profit school, the only focus principal Lance Howard has is numbers...student numbers and test scores. I really dislike teaching here and will tough it out, but will not return next school year. There's not enough resources or support to meet needs of ELL and special needs students and there's no excuse for such large classes. Oh, by the way, students are in school from 7:30-3:30, Monday-Thursday and 7:30-1:30, Friday's, and had indoor recess 40 times last year, due to "cold weather. Do your children a favor, avoid Roosevelt Edison Charter School. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
