Holly Hills Elementary School

Summary:

Holly Hills Elementary School is a public elementary school in Denver, Colorado, serving 504 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Cherry Creek School District No. 5, which is ranked 28 out of 116 districts in the state.

Holly Hills has a diverse student population, with 37.1% White, 13.69% African American, 32.94% Hispanic, 3.97% Asian, and 10.52% two or more races. However, the school has consistently underperformed compared to the district and state averages in CMAS test scores, with only 27.5% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 24.6% in math, significantly lower than the district and state. This may be due to the high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 62.9% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, much higher than nearby schools like University Park Elementary (26.96%) and Slavens K-8 (9.18%).

The challenges faced by Holly Hills are reflected in its declining performance, dropping from a 3-star rating in 2015-2016 to a 1-star rating in 2023-2024. The school's struggles are particularly evident in the performance of its low-socioeconomic status students, who ranked 347 out of 365 Colorado elementary schools in 2023-2024 with a 0-star rating. Addressing these issues and implementing effective strategies to support the school's unique student population could be crucial in improving the overall educational outcomes at Holly Hills.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child has attended this school for two years and I am ready to change school districts. Everything this school does makes absolutely no sense to me. They prefer children to ride the bus instead of getting dropped off and if you have your child dropped off/picked up, it is a huge hassle just getting around the buses to get your child. Breakfast and lunch is basically yogurt, orange slices and milk. There is a main entree, usually pizza or a corndog, but everything else is just yogurt, a piece of fruit and juice or milk. The kids running around outside after school waiting to be picked up or get on the bus are not supervised. Whoever happens to be outside, whether a teacher or the principal, are likely talking on their phones or yelling at someone instead of watching the kids. There is no communication between teachers and parents. I did not have a single parent/teacher conference during my child's year of kindergarten. When it came time for their kindergarten graduation they decided not to invite the parents and just go ahead with the ceremony and not let anyone know about it. I also paid for a class picture that I never received. The office staff has never been rude but they are completely clueless to any question you ask them and never offer an answer, just a blank stare. I am hoping to move soon and get my child out of the cherry creek district, which I believe is horrible. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
