Santiago Hills Elementary

Summary:

Santiago Hills Elementary is a highly-ranked public elementary school in Irvine, California, serving 548 students in grades K-6 and part of the acclaimed Irvine Unified School District. This school consistently outperforms the district and state in academic achievement, with 84.72% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy and 86.86% proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 73.94% and 69.35% in the district, respectively.

Santiago Hills Elementary excels in supporting the academic success of diverse student subgroups, ranking within the top 5% of California elementary schools for English Language Learners and low socioeconomic status students, and within the top 10% for Asian and multi-racial students. The school also maintains relatively low chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 3.4% to 9.0% in recent years, lower than the district and state averages. While Santiago Hills Elementary outperforms the district and state, it is not the only high-performing school in the area, as nearby Canyon View Elementary and Stonegate Elementary also demonstrate strong academic achievement.

Santiago Hills Elementary has maintained its exceptional performance over an extended period, with a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger and consistent top rankings in the state for the past decade. This suggests a well-established culture of academic excellence and effective instructional practices. While the school serves a relatively affluent student population, with a low percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, it still supports the success of a diverse student body, including strong performance among Asian, Hispanic, and multi-racial students. Potential areas for improvement may include the performance of White students, who rank lower than other subgroups, and further reducing chronic absenteeism rates.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Santiago Hills used to be a great school, despite the fact that it has gone through couple principals, good and bad. Current principal is new and first-time being principal, and is condescending to minority parents (perhaps because he was VP @ Rancho Middle School and dealt with lots of fobbish parents), often using big words in the wrong context. School under him let go of good teachers, and received new teachers who are either okay or incompetent. Whereas before, SH usually get very exceptional new teachers. Very few PTA activities now but school nickels and dimes parents by making many events mandatory fundraisers which you need to purchase admission. Many combo classes combining 2 different grades. Hits and misses with teachers but you may get lucky. Going through personnel/teacher changes this summer so don't register until fall 2013. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
