Hurley Elementary

Summary:

Hurley Elementary is a public elementary school in Visalia, California, serving 578 students in grades K-6 and part of the Visalia Unified School District. This high-performing school consistently outperforms the district and state in academic assessments, particularly in English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics.

Hurley Elementary's academic excellence is evident across all grade levels, with 56.65% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy and 55.36% proficient or better in Mathematics, significantly higher than the district and state averages. The school's performance is especially strong among certain student subgroups, such as White students and Special Education students, who rank among the top California elementary schools in these areas. However, the school's performance for Hispanic and Low Socioeconomic Status students, while still above the district and state, is not as strong as its performance for other subgroups.

While Hurley Elementary's academic achievements are impressive, the school has seen a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 4.3% in 2018-2019 to 24.9% in 2022-2023. This trend may negatively impact student learning and academic success. Compared to nearby schools, Hurley Elementary generally outperforms its counterparts within the Visalia Unified School District, though some nearby schools, such as Denton Elementary and Oak Grove Elementary, also demonstrate strong academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Unlike higher ranked elementary schools in Visalia (Royal Oaks, Oak Grove),
Hurley offers no motivational incentives for students regarding academic achievements. There are no honor roll, character, or other awards ceremonies.
(There are awards for fund raising)
As a result, Hurley academic achievement levels continue to steadily decline.
Considering most of the children derive from dual educated parents, and reside with both parents- makes these results are even more dramatic.
Most of the teachers are excellent. However, class sizes are larger than like schools in district, which seriously limits teacher's capabilities.
There is no program for GATE identified students. They are not challenged, but instead are required to assist "distracted/ misbehaving" classmates. This may be somewhat attributed to No Child Left Behind. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
