Sunridge Charter

Summary:

Sunridge Charter is a public charter elementary school located in Sebastopol, California, serving grades K-8 with a total enrollment of 243 students. The school is part of the Twin Hills Union Elementary District, which is ranked 290 out of 1,568 districts in California and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Sunridge Charter consistently outperforms the Twin Hills Union Elementary District and the state of California in Smarter Balanced Assessments for English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics across all grade levels. In the 2023-2024 school year, Sunridge Charter's proficiency rates in ELA/Literacy ranged from 39.29% (3rd grade) to 82.35% (8th grade), compared to the district's 37.66% to 66.37% and the state's 42.8% to 47.04%. In Mathematics, Sunridge Charter's proficiency rates ranged from 23.08% (7th grade) to 54.55% (6th grade), compared to the district's 42.11% to 52.68% and the state's 31.57% to 45.64%. However, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 5.1% in 2020-2021 to 33.2% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average.

Sunridge Charter's performance is generally stronger than the nearby schools in the Twin Hills Union Elementary District and the Gravenstein Union Elementary District. The Sebastopol Independent Charter School, located just 1.7 miles away, also demonstrates strong academic performance, with proficiency rates comparable to or exceeding Sunridge Charter in many areas. However, Sunridge Charter has a higher percentage of White students (around 70%) and a lower percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds (around 34%) compared to the state, which may contribute to its strong academic performance but also raises questions about equity and access for underrepresented student groups.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We have been so happy with this Waldorf-inspired charter school. The teachers and staff are amazingly dedicated, skilled, creative, and caring. The Waldorf foundation is strong but not dogmatic, truly providing students with a well-integrated and developmentally savvy curriculum that beautifully supports the development of each child's "head, heart, and hands". I have seen many graduating classes at this point, and I am continually impressed by the students' confidence and comfort in themselves, their kindness and open heartedness with each other, their creativity, multi-faceted intelligence, academic skills, artistic abilities, and innovative thinking. I've been deeply touched by the beauty and depth of performances, festivals, assignments, projects, instruction, relationships...I have a masters degree in education and have never been as impressed with a school. I'm grateful to SunRidge School for giving my children an outstanding education and giving our whole family a dynamic, caring, thoughtful, fun, and celebratory community. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
