Helen Estock Elementary

Summary:

Helen Estock Elementary is a public elementary school in Tustin, California, serving 454 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Tustin Unified School District, which is ranked 404 out of 1,568 districts in the state.

Despite being part of a relatively well-performing district, Helen Estock Elementary faces significant challenges. The school has seen a sharp increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 9.4% in 2018-2019 to 39.9% in 2021-2022, which is notably higher than the 21.8% rate at nearby Sycamore Magnet Academy. Academically, Helen Estock consistently underperforms compared to the district and state averages, with only 14.52% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy and 13.9% in Mathematics in 2023-2024, far below the district and state levels. The school also serves a high-needs student population, with 89.21% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the 53.07% at Guin Foss Elementary.

These challenges appear to be widening the performance gap between Helen Estock and its surrounding schools, as well as the district and state averages. The school's high chronic absenteeism rates and socioeconomic factors may be contributing to the low academic performance, which is particularly concerning for vulnerable student subgroups, such as Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities. While the nearby schools, like Loma Vista Elementary, generally outperform Helen Estock, there may be opportunities to learn from their practices and strategies to improve outcomes for the students at Helen Estock Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is the worst school my child has ever attended. There's no discipline, nobody in the staff seems to "really" care about the students. They are simply there as poor quality child care providers. This is an underachieving school in the Tustin school district. It's hard to differentiate between the content tought in 1st and 2nd grade from that tought in kinder. No kid left behind basically means that everyone has to wait for the bad students to catch up to the good ones. This school needs help, possibly a charter school intervention? The school blames the State because of the high student to teacher ratio. I believe is more of an issue of indifference since most of the students are Hispanic and don't even live in Tustin. I attended this school as a child and now it is not even close to what it once was. Indifference is the key word in this posting. No one seems to care. Nor the parents neither the staff. No matter how much you complaint to the district, they will just give you a deaf ear. believe me, I've tried! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
