Daniel J. Savage Middle

Summary:

Daniel J. Savage Middle is a public middle school located in Modesto, California, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 863 students. It is part of the Sylvan Union Elementary School District, which is ranked 873 out of 1,568 districts in California and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Daniel J. Savage Middle has seen a decline in its statewide ranking over the past few years, dropping from a high of 549 out of 2,379 California middle schools in 2012-2013 to 919 out of 2,777 in the current 2023-2024 school year, its performance varies across different student subgroups. Hispanic and English Language Learner students perform relatively well, ranking in the top 30-40% of California middle schools, but Asian, African American, and Multi-racial students struggle, ranking in the bottom 30-50% of schools. The school's test scores are generally on par with or slightly above the Sylvan Union Elementary District average, but below the state average in both English Language Arts and Mathematics.

Interestingly, when compared to other nearby middle schools in the same district, such as Somerset Middle and Elizabeth Ustach Middle, Daniel J. Savage Middle generally performs better, with higher test scores and a higher statewide ranking. However, it lags behind Elizabeth Ustach Middle, which is ranked 750 out of 2,777 California middle schools and has stronger academic performance. The school's increasing percentage of students receiving free/reduced-price lunch, coupled with its high chronic absenteeism rate, suggests that socioeconomic factors may be playing a significant role in the school's academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Look beyond the walls of beauty from this new school as there are cracks every where. Bullying, drugs, fights with no supervision within sight, and poor staff communication to name a few. There is very little leadership and to much passing the buck on issues. The administrative staff can't see through their own bureaucracy and lost sight of the true victims; the children. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
