Buena Vista/ Horace Mann K-8

Summary:

Buena Vista/ Horace Mann K-8 is a public elementary and middle school in San Francisco, California, serving 598 students from kindergarten through 8th grade. The school is part of the San Francisco Unified School District, which is ranked 651 out of 1,568 districts in the state.

Despite being located in San Francisco, Buena Vista/ Horace Mann K-8 consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of California elementary schools, with its performance on standardized tests significantly below the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 29.37% of students were proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy, compared to 53.73% in the district and 47.04% statewide. The school's low academic performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, such as male students, Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students with low socioeconomic status.

The challenges faced by Buena Vista/ Horace Mann K-8 may be more systemic within the local community, as nearby schools like Flynn (Leonard R.) Elementary, Bryant Elementary, and Sanchez Elementary also struggle academically. However, some nearby schools, such as Huerta (Dolores) Elementary and Milk (Harvey) Civil Rights Elementary, perform significantly better, suggesting that there may be opportunities for Buena Vista/ Horace Mann K-8 to learn and improve through collaboration and targeted interventions.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school is in decline. They're not teaching with any rigor students can barely read and write. The school pretends to care about improving learning but they really don't because the only thing that has changed is that fewer middle class families attend the school. Without those families the school is doomed. We're leaving. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
