Ross Elementary

Summary:

Ross Elementary is a public elementary school in San Diego, California, serving 162 students in grades K-5. It is part of the San Diego Unified School District, which is ranked 604 out of 1,568 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Ross Elementary has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism rates, rising from 13.3% in 2018-2019 to 57.4% in 2021-2022, the school's academic performance is also a concern. Proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science on state assessments are generally lower than the district and state averages across grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 40.91% of Ross Elementary students were proficient or better in ELA End of Course, compared to 54.22% for the district and 47.04% for the state. Additionally, the school's performance in Mathematics and CAST Science assessments is also below the district and state averages.

When compared to other nearby schools in the same district, such as Sequoia Elementary and Chesterton Elementary, Ross Elementary generally performs worse in academic assessments, with lower proficiency rates across grade levels and subject areas. However, the school's English Language Learner and Low Socioeconomic Status student subgroups have higher rankings, suggesting these students are performing better relative to their peers. Overall, the analysis of Ross Elementary's data reveals several areas of concern, including high chronic absenteeism and underperformance in core academic subjects, which suggest the need for targeted interventions and support to improve overall student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The new principle Rosemary Cruz is turning this beautifully nestled Clairemont school around. She's gained multiple grants including one to teach the "Eight Laws of Successful People. Costco has sponsored their reading program and even made sure all the students have backpacks. There's a general excitement about our neighborhood school and all the new changes thus far. We even have a meet up to all walk the kids into school on Wednesday. Another program that Mrs. Cruz started. I love dropping my son at his diverse TK class. His teacher has her masters and is focused on child lead learning that has my son asking me to help him research and chase down information and experiences he's interested in. I could not be more impressed with Ross and it's community of parents and teachers. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
