Del Lago Elementary

Summary:

Del Lago Elementary is a public elementary school in Mission Viejo, California, serving 355 students in grades K-6 and part of the Saddleback Valley Unified School District. While the district is ranked 376 out of 1,568 in California and has a 4-star rating, Del Lago Elementary has seen a concerning decline in its statewide ranking over the past decade, dropping from 996 out of 5,390 California elementary schools in 2011-2012 to 3,213 out of 5,862 in 2023-2024, with a current 2-star rating.

The school's performance has declined across various student subgroups, including female, male, Hispanic, and white students, as well as low-income students. However, the school's ranking for disabled students remains relatively strong, at 470 out of 2,227 California elementary schools in 2021-2022. Additionally, Del Lago Elementary has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 4.4% in 2018-2019 to 27.7% in 2022-2023, which may be contributing to the school's overall academic struggles. The school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science are consistently below the Saddleback Valley Unified School District and the state of California averages.

When compared to neighboring schools within the Saddleback Valley Unified School District, such as La Madera Elementary, Rancho Canada Elementary, and Foothill Ranch Elementary, Del Lago Elementary consistently underperforms in terms of statewide ranking, academic proficiency, and chronic absenteeism rates. Furthermore, the nearby Oxford Preparatory Academy - South Orange County, a public charter school, outperforms both Del Lago Elementary and the Saddleback Valley Unified School District in academic proficiency across all grade levels and subject areas.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter is in 2nd grade, she came from foothill elementary. My daughter is learning nothing and the teacher does not return any of my emails. I haved talked to her teacher several times to please keep me posted via email, nothing! I have emailed the principal who has not returned my email. I also paid for an after school math class which was in a different location, they did not help the students either. I feel Del Lago will hire just about anyone to teach and even when a parent reaches out the staff do not care. I was going to give it a 1 rating but Im sure it could always be worse. I am hoping to get my daughter out of this school with the district transfer lottery. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
