Concord High

Summary:

Concord High is a public high school located in Concord, California, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,167 students. The school is part of the Mt. Diablo Unified School District, which is ranked 789 out of 1,568 districts in California and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Concord High faces several academic challenges, with its performance on standardized tests generally below the district and state averages. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 44.9% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy, compared to 52.79% for the district and 55.73% for the state. In mathematics, the proficiency rate for 11th-grade students was just 16.6%, significantly lower than the district (29.36%) and state (27.9%) averages. The school's performance on the California Science Test (CAST) is also below the district and state levels. Additionally, Concord High has seen a decline in its four-year graduation rate, from 95.2% in 2019-2020 to 92.0% in 2022-2023, and an increase in its dropout rate from 1.9% in 2018-2019 to 5.3% in 2022-2023.

Interestingly, Concord High's academic performance is generally lower than that of nearby schools, such as College Park High and Northgate High, which are also part of the Mt. Diablo Unified School District. These schools consistently outperform Concord High on standardized tests and have higher graduation rates. Additionally, Concord High's high chronic absenteeism rate, which has increased from 10.0% in 2017-2018 to 24.2% in 2022-2023, is likely linked to its relatively high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 37.53% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
