City of Angels

Summary:

City of Angels is an alternative public school in Los Angeles, California that serves grades K-12 with a total enrollment of 1,115 students. The school faces significant challenges compared to its peers, with consistently low four-year graduation rates ranging from 36.7% to 65.9% over the past 5 years, much higher than the Los Angeles Unified School District average of around 50% and the statewide average of around 55%. Correspondingly, City of Angels has had high dropout rates, ranging from 21.6% to 43.4%, and extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 58.2% to 74.8%, over 20 percentage points higher than the district and state averages.

Across all grade levels and subject areas, City of Angels students perform significantly worse than their peers in the Los Angeles Unified School District and the state of California. For example, in 11th grade English Language Arts, only 40.56% of City of Angels students were proficient or better, compared to 49.56% in the district and 55.73% statewide. The nearby schools in the same district, such as Foshay Learning Center and Thirty-Second Street USC Performing Arts, generally have much stronger performance metrics, with 100% four-year graduation rates, compared to City of Angels' 37-65% range.

The challenges faced by City of Angels may be exacerbated by the school's high-poverty student population, with around 75-80% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. This is further highlighted by the struggles of nearby public virtual schools, such as Leadership & Public Service Virtual Academy and Virtual Academy STEAM, which also have low graduation rates, high dropout rates, and high chronic absenteeism. In contrast, the nearby Renaissance Arts Academy, a public charter school, has dramatically outperformed City of Angels and the other nearby schools across nearly all metrics, suggesting that alternative school models may be worth exploring to better serve the needs of this student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
