La Canada High

Summary:

La Canada High is a public high school serving grades 7-12 with a total enrollment of 1,993 students in the affluent community of La Canada, California. As part of the highly-ranked La Canada Unified School District, La Canada High has consistently been one of the top-performing high schools in the state, ranking within the top 20 California high schools for the past several years.

La Canada High's exceptional academic performance is evident across multiple metrics. The school consistently outperforms state and district averages in standardized test scores, with 89.43% of 11th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy, compared to 55.73% statewide. In mathematics, 79.43% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better, far exceeding the 27.9% statewide average. La Canada High also boasts an exceptionally high four-year graduation rate, ranging from 97.6% to 100% over the past five years, and a low dropout rate of 0% to 1.8% during the same period. Additionally, the school's chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 3.7% to 7.7%, are significantly lower than many nearby schools.

While La Canada High is an exceptional performer, the nearby schools show a wide range of academic achievement. For example, Eagle Rock High and Glendale High have significantly lower test scores and graduation rates compared to La Canada High, highlighting the disparity in educational outcomes within the region. This suggests that the La Canada Unified School District, and specifically La Canada High, are providing a high-quality education that is not consistently available in the surrounding area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Just an amazing school with fantastic teachers. La Canada by far is one of the best school system. Your kids are going to get the best education and prepare them for the future. Close Quote

Open Quote The is no reason to move into the La Canada Unified School District. Instead of instilling success, the district gives a program which embraces failure, called "Challenge Success." Instead of hard date on college acceptances, the LCUSD hides the true fact that the college most attended by its graduates will be Pasadena City College, and refuses to present hard date on the failure to La Canada High School to place its students in decent 4 year colleges. When the parents ask for security, the district gives you a wellness center ... for the teachers. As a family that has lived here for over a decade, I can tell you ... run. It's not worth it. Open Quote An over rated school that is insensitive to various ethnic and minorities in the neighborhood. The teaching professionals are quite stale in their tenure and have been in place for a long, long time. As such, not much improvements have taken place in their quality of classroom instruction. Exacerbating the problem is the student body from a neighboring community that is surprisingly exclusive in its intolerance for anyone or anything outside of the accepted norm. In the end, social interactions among various groups of students are quite limited. School cohesion is lacking and the overall experience as a child attending this school suffers. A very un-California like experience. Parents contemplating a move here should consider other school districts around the area like South Pasadena and San Marino. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers assign way too much work and the administration doesn't help the kids. If you aren't academically gifted and don't fit into are different than the other kids in any way because of how they dress or what they like or for being themselves, this isn't a good place for them. The kids are mean, horrible people for the most part and it was one of the worst experiences I went through. I was ridiculed by the students and the administration and the teachers didn't want to deal with my sister or I because we have ADHD. Often times, other kids would call me stupid because I didn't have a 4.0 GPA and was artistically driven. If your child is academically gifted, good at taking tests, doesn't mind doing hours of homework and constantly competing with other kids, then send them to this school. However, if you want your child to have a more enjoyable high school experience where they're given to the environment to succeed and actually learn, then send them somewhere else. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
