Carrillo Ranch Elementary

Summary:

Carrillo Ranch Elementary is a public elementary school in Indio, California, serving 492 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Desert Sands Unified School District, which is ranked 1011 out of 1568 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Carrillo Ranch Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of California elementary schools over the past 10 years, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts (33.62%) and Mathematics (26.69%) significantly lower than the district (39.07% and 26.17%) and state (47.04% and 35.54%) averages. Compared to nearby schools like James Monroe Elementary, which has higher proficiency rates, Carrillo Ranch's academic performance is generally lower. The school has also seen a sharp increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 10.6% in 2017-2018 to 33.5% in 2022-2023, which is higher than nearby schools.

Carrillo Ranch Elementary serves a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 80.89% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023, higher than the district average. This suggests the school may face additional challenges in supporting student learning and development. While the school has a slightly lower student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools, the significant decline in academic performance and high chronic absenteeism indicate the need for targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes at Carrillo Ranch Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We transferred to get into Carrillo Ranch. It was not worth the effort in my opinion, but everyone is looking for something different. We are very artistic and relational in our family and my children used to LOVE to learn. I feel like the staff is "professional" but not warm. Too much homework, no replies to my notes from teacher, business like impersonal front desk staff who ask me every time who my child is. Our last school knew us by name and communicated often. It felt a lot more like family. Guess you can't have it all.:) Some of the programs are wonderful here! The band teacher is amazing and patient and kind. I'm sure they do their best, but with all the homework, and losing sleep to do it all, we've become chronically late and I don't even care anymore. Sleep matters more than performing like a robot. We have a busy after school life and can't fit all the extra after hours education in. I'm raising a child, not a number. Teacher feedback consists of an automatic email saying if my child was green or red. I hate that. Its based on homework or technical issues and I'd rather it be about character and classwork. Staying in from recess for missing homework is also counterproductive. Kids need to run and play to get out their wiggles and pay attention better when they get back inside. I'm craving an emotional break from all they require. Our quality family time has taken a direct hit due to all the stress of homework, selling door to door for fieldtrips and fundraisers. I'd rather have humble fun fieldtrips that take less out of us just to reduce stress load. I want them to be students, not salesmen, and hometime should be to do chores, play with friends, snuggle with family and bond and experience life together. A little review would be fine, but not the extent we have here. :( Very sad when I think on it too long. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
