Anna Henry Elementary School

Summary:

Anna Henry Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 267 students in grades PK-5 in the Tucson Unified District in Tucson, Arizona. The school has a diverse student population, with 36.33% White, 9.74% African American, 39.7% Hispanic, 1.12% Asian, 4.49% Pacific Islander, and 8.61% two or more races.

Despite its diverse student body, Anna Henry Elementary School has consistently underperformed compared to state and district averages in academic proficiency. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics were significantly lower than the state and district averages across all grade levels. For example, in 5th grade, only 39% of students were proficient in ELA, compared to 37% at the state level and 26% in the Tucson Unified District. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with African American students ranking in the top 10 out of 607 Arizona elementary schools, while Hispanic students ranked in the bottom 30%.

When compared to nearby schools, Anna Henry Elementary School generally performs worse academically. For instance, Gale Elementary, located just over a mile away, consistently outperforms Anna Henry in ELA and Mathematics proficiency across all grade levels. The school's high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as its relatively small student population and high student-teacher ratio, may be contributing factors to its academic struggles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote On the first 2 days of school they tried to put my kindergartener on the bus when he didn't take the bus. Then having never seen me before the monitor let me walk onto the playground "while he was waiting in line to be put on the bus that he didn't take" and walk off with him and no one stopped me! So they let anyone walk up to a student a walk off with them no questions asked! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
