Paul Dunbar Lawrence School

Summary:

Paul Dunbar Lawrence School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Phoenix, Arizona, with a student population of 138 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school's student body is predominantly Hispanic (55.8%) and African American (35.51%), with a high percentage of students from low-income families.

Despite its small size, Paul Dunbar Lawrence School faces significant academic challenges. The school consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Arizona elementary schools, with proficiency rates well below the state and district averages in core subjects like Science. The school's dropout rates have also been higher than the state average in the past, though the most recent rate of 0% is a positive sign. Compared to nearby schools like Kenilworth Elementary School, Paul Dunbar Lawrence School generally performs worse academically, with lower proficiency rates across multiple grade levels.

The high percentage of students from low-income families at Paul Dunbar Lawrence School, coupled with its relatively low student-teacher ratio, suggest that the school may be in need of additional funding and resources to address the unique challenges faced by its student population. The school's declining statewide ranking over the years and the Phoenix Elementary District's overall low ranking and 1-star rating raise questions about the allocation and distribution of resources within the district, which may be contributing to the persistent achievement gaps at Paul Dunbar Lawrence School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Teachers amazing however the front staff is horrible and should not even be aloud to be in a school, my son was hit multiple times in the head and the did nothing because it was on his way to school and then didn't bother to call me till 3 pm and tell me my son had been in the nurses office all day due to it. This school is honestly one of the worst school's in Phoenix. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
