Canyon Breeze Elementary

Summary:

Canyon Breeze Elementary is a public elementary school in Avondale, Arizona, serving grades PK-8 and part of the Pendergast Elementary District. The school faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom quarter of Arizona elementary schools over the past 5 years. On state assessments, only 18-42% of students at Canyon Breeze were proficient in English Language Arts, and just 12-29% were proficient in mathematics, well below state averages.

The school's struggles extend across various student subgroups, with the exception of English Language Learners, who perform relatively better. Canyon Breeze's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 60.75% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, likely contributes to the academic challenges. The school also has relatively low per-student spending and a high student-teacher ratio, which may impact the level of individualized attention and support available to students.

While Canyon Breeze Elementary has a diverse student population, nearby schools in the Pendergast District generally perform better on academic measures, though still struggle to meet state averages. In contrast, schools in the Litchfield Elementary District and the Imagine Avondale Elementary charter network tend to outperform Canyon Breeze and the Pendergast District, suggesting opportunities for the school to learn from and adopt successful practices from higher-performing schools in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote AMAZING SCHOOL FILLED WITH AMAZING STAFF!! Ms. Pizzo is the best principal my three kids have ever had, she's super involved, every morning on the morning announcements she acknowledges students' hardwork and efforts, she dresses up for every event and holiday. She just makes it's fun to be at her school, and so do the teachers. This school has so much student involvement and events it's wonderful. My daughter has attended this school for 1st & 2nd grade- Armer & Jones- and they have been the most fantastic teachers, and I've literally seen them go out of their way for their students. These teachers aren't just people being paid to be there, they're teachers that love their students, love their jobs, and really make everyone feel valued. The worst part about this school is having to leave it. My daughter has had some learning difficulties, and the entire school has come together to help her catch up and not get left behind. The physical appearance is clean, well maintained, and covered in student's school work. I really would recommend this school to everyone. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
