Whitman Elementary School

Summary:

Whitman Elementary School is a public elementary school in Mesa, Arizona, serving 593 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the Mesa Unified District, which is ranked 179 out of 288 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Whitman Elementary School consistently ranks in the bottom half of Arizona elementary schools, with a ranking between 600-850 out of over 1,000 schools in recent years. The school's academic performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and Mathematics, is significantly below the district and state averages across all grade levels. The school performs particularly poorly for certain student subgroups, such as Native American, Pacific Islander, and Special Education students, ranking in the bottom 20-30% of Arizona schools for these groups. However, the school performs relatively better for African American and multi-racial students, ranking in the top 50% of Arizona schools for these subgroups.

Whitman Elementary School has a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 76.9% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. This high rate of economically disadvantaged students is likely a contributing factor to the school's overall academic underperformance. When compared to nearby schools within the same district, such as MacArthur Elementary School, Whitman Elementary School generally performs worse academically, with lower proficiency rates and lower rankings. However, the school's diverse student population and the presence of higher-performing nearby schools suggest that there may be opportunities to learn from successful practices and implement targeted interventions to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The handling of bullying is near non-existent. They say they have 0 tolerance, but when does the 0 tolerance start? After the 100th time it has been reported? They couldn't even spell my child's name right for the whole year, you know how many times my son got accomplishment rewards with his name misspelled? Then on many occasions they would call him my daughter, paperwork had "she" instead of "he". Also, when I had to call him in because he was sick, not only did they not know who I was calling in about I was asked many times who I was. I am not sure how many ways you can say mother. I am not sure how this school has been able to stay functioning. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
