Discovery School

Summary:

Discovery School is a K-8 elementary school located in Glendale, Arizona, which is part of the Glendale Elementary District. The school has seen a steady decline in its White student population, with the percentage decreasing from 15.42% in 2020-2021 to 10.17% in 2022-2023, while the percentage of Hispanic students has increased from 69.38% to 76.95% over the same period.

Despite being in a lower-performing district, Discovery School outperforms the district and the state of Arizona in academic proficiency across multiple grade levels and subjects. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 55% of 7th graders at Discovery School were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 23% for the district and 41% for the state. In 8th grade math, 51% of Discovery School students were proficient or better, while the district and state had 19% and 28%, respectively. The school also maintains relatively low dropout rates, ranging from 0.4% to 1.8% over the past several years, which is lower than the state average.

While Discovery School generally outperforms other nearby schools in the Glendale Elementary District, such as Don Mensendick School and William C Jack School, it lags behind the nearby Desert Mirage Elementary School, which is in the Pendergast Elementary District, in several areas. The school's ability to effectively utilize its resources, with a higher per-student spending and lower student-teacher ratio than some nearby schools, suggests that it is able to support student learning effectively.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The academics and faculty at this school are phenomenal!! They have a great extra curricular activities department, great student council and good parent turn out for events. The principal is in need of an attitude adjustment, she is non responsive when problems are brought to her attention and confrontational when asked to correct mistakes, but her vice principal would do (and does do) the job wonderfully. The office as well as maintenance staff go above and beyond at all times and the teaching staff is the most dedicated group of teachers iv had the pleasure of dealing with both as a parent and also a teacher myself. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
