Leupp Public School

Summary:

Leupp Public School is an elementary school located in Flagstaff, Arizona, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of around 150, the vast majority of whom are Native American. The school faces significant challenges, with consistently poor academic performance, low rankings, and a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students.

Leupp Public School stands out for its overwhelmingly high percentage of Native American students, ranging from 96.67% to 97.76% over the past 3 school years, which is much higher than the nearby Eva Marshall Elementary School, W F Killip Elementary School, and other schools in the Flagstaff Unified District. This unique demographic composition is likely due to the school's location on the Navajo Nation reservation. However, the school's academic performance is consistently poor, with proficiency rates ranging from just 7% to 13% in English Language Arts and 7% to 11% in Mathematics, significantly lower than the district and state averages.

Leupp Public School has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Arizona elementary schools, with rankings ranging from 1064 out of 1109 schools in 2017-2018 to 1228 out of 1245 schools in 2022-2023. The school has received 0 or 1 out of 5 stars from SchoolDigger, indicating it is one of the lowest-performing schools in the state. This poor performance is particularly pronounced for the school's Native American, male, and special education student subgroups, which rank in the bottom 50% of Arizona elementary schools. Additionally, Leupp Public School has a very high percentage of students (around 88%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, highlighting the significant economic disadvantages faced by the student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have been a parent here for 5 years. This school is great in the elementary years. I am pleased to say that Leupp has Music instruction once again. We are happy to have Mrs. Hartgrove and her Music class. Mrs. Dunfee is our specials teacher and she teaches P.E., Library and Art. She is a gem to treasure for sure! She has extraordinary energy that is given to the students and they really appreciate all that she does for the kids. Our PTO is small but entirely dedicated to the kids. They sponsor field trips and meals for the students. The PTO is very active. We are the unique elementary school because of the population being almost a 100 percent Navajo. Great setting to work in! About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
