Desert Sky Community School

Summary:

Desert Sky Community School is a public charter elementary school located in Tucson, Arizona, serving grades K-5 with a total enrollment of 39 students. While the school has a significantly higher percentage of white students compared to the surrounding schools, its academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics, is generally lower than the state and district averages.

Despite having a relatively low percentage of economically disadvantaged students, Desert Sky Community School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Arizona elementary schools, suggesting challenges in the school's curriculum, instruction, or support systems. In contrast, the nearby schools, such as W Arthur Sewel Elementary School, Bonillas Elementary Basic Curriculum Magnet School, and Lineweaver Elementary School, have more diverse student populations and generally outperform Desert Sky Community School in academic performance.

These findings suggest that Desert Sky Community School may face challenges in providing a high-quality education and equitable opportunities for its students. Further investigation may be warranted to understand the root causes of the school's underperformance and the potential areas for improvement, especially in comparison to the more successful nearby schools within the Tucson Unified District and other surrounding districts.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I love Desert Sky! Having access to a tuition-free Waldorf education is great. My kids have had a wonderful learning experience at the school, which teaches them to truly understand rather than just memorize information. Besides their core academics they have been learning Spanish and German as well as singing and different instruments. There is also a school garden where the kids grow herbs, vegetables, and some fruit. Throughout the year the students (and the whole school community) participate in seasonal festivals and activities. And my children love their teachers, who care deeply about them and their needs and progress (and who have an excellent relationship with the parents). Close Quote

Open Quote Both of my daughters have been enrolled at desert sky since Kindergarten. I feel this was the best school I could find that mimicked the nurturing nature of home. The school believes in a play based cirriculum and focuses on learning with the whole body instead of limiting it to the head. The teachers are all wonderful and warm and well educated in both mainstream academics as well as Waldorf specific education. I also really enjoy the fellow parents and the warmth of school community. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
