TIA East

Summary:

TIA East is an alternative public charter school located in Tucson, Arizona, serving grades K-12 with a total enrollment of 87 students and a diverse student population.

TIA East stands out among nearby schools in its academic performance, particularly in Science and English Language Arts, where 11th-grade students outperform the district and state averages. The school also maintains an impressive 0.0% dropout rate, significantly lower than the state average. However, TIA East serves a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 81.61% to 83% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, higher than nearby schools like Vail Academy & High School (26.71%) and Presidio School (89.42%). This economic disadvantage may contribute to the challenges the school faces, though its significant increase in spending per student, from $7,256 in 2019-2020 to $15,059 in 2021-2022, suggests a focus on providing additional resources and support to its students.

Compared to nearby alternative schools, TIA East has a lower four-year graduation rate (90.9%) and higher dropout rate (0.7%) than Vail Academy & High School, but a higher four-year graduation rate and lower dropout rate than Sunnyside Online Success Academy. TIA East also has a higher percentage of Hispanic students (65.52%) compared to the nearby schools, which range from 35.37% to 95.33% Hispanic. Overall, TIA East appears to be a unique alternative school that is making strides in improving educational outcomes for its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We are a small K-12 public charter school where the feeling of belonging and having a safe campus is essential.

Tucson International Academy has a great curriculum for kids who need that extra challenge at school. We use center and project based learning in both the upper and lower grades. We know this has been successful for our students because 100 of our graduates are accepted into a college or university. We have a very active Junior Achievement program along with a College/Career Coach who works with all of our students.

Teachers give weekly progress reports for all students because we believe communication and parental support are key components for our students' success. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
