Turnbow Elementary School

Summary:

Turnbow Elementary School is a public elementary school in the Springdale School District in Arkansas, serving 591 students in grades K-5. With a 2-star rating out of 5 from SchoolDigger and ranking 277 out of 497 Arkansas elementary schools, Turnbow faces several key challenges.

Turnbow Elementary consistently performs below the Springdale School District and Arkansas state averages in various subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 33.7% of Turnbow students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 29.7% for the district and 33.8% for the state. Additionally, Turnbow has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 79.02% to 82.86% over the past 3 years, significantly higher than the district and state averages. This high-poverty student population may contribute to the school's lower performance, as its spending per student of $9,203 in 2018-2019 was lower than the district average.

When comparing Turnbow to other nearby schools in the Springdale district, some key differences emerge. John Tyson Elementary consistently outperforms Turnbow across all subjects and grade levels, while Bayyari Elementary and George Elementary have similar or lower test scores. The closest school to Turnbow, Harp Elementary, has slightly better test scores but a similar high percentage of free/reduced lunch students. These comparisons suggest that the challenges faced by Turnbow are not unique and may be indicative of broader systemic issues within the Springdale School District.

Open Quote Turnbow is an excellent school! Our daughter has flourished academically here. The numbers speak to the many obstacles the educators face at this school. What the numbers don't tell is the baseline where these kids started, nor the strides made since the beginning of their education here. Turnbow's approach to teaching allows them to effectively reach kids of all levels.
Beyond the classroom, Turnbow embraces and celebrates the cultural differences. They teach respect and unity.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this school, staff and sweet children in attendance. I would encourage anyone doubting Turnbow because of test scores to take a closer look and see if the school aligns with your values as a family. I was one of those doubters, but so happy we decided to give it a try! Close Quote

Open Quote My son attends this school and I am currently looking to move out of the district. My son's reading level actually went down 2 grade levels since attending this school and the only recommendations they offer is to medicate my son. I fully understand why this school is one of the lowest rated elementary schools in the state. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
