Harry C. Morrison Elementary School

Summary:

Harry C. Morrison Elementary School is a public elementary school in Fort Smith, Arkansas, serving 275 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Fort Smith School District, which is ranked 160 out of 252 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its small size, Harry C. Morrison Elementary School faces significant academic challenges. The school consistently ranks in the bottom half of Arkansas elementary schools, with proficiency rates in ATLAS/English Language Arts, Reading, Mathematics, and Science that are 10-20 percentage points lower than the district and state averages. This is likely due to the school's high percentage of students from low-income families, ranging from 90.91% to 93.06% over the past 3 years. In comparison, nearby schools like Parkview Elementary and Rena Elementary in the Van Buren School District have significantly higher proficiency rates across the board.

While Harry C. Morrison Elementary School has a lower student-teacher ratio compared to the district average, this does not appear to be translating into better academic outcomes. The school's performance is similar or slightly worse than other Fort Smith schools serving a comparable demographic, suggesting that factors beyond just student socioeconomic status, such as district-level policies, resources, and instructional practices, may be contributing to the performance gap. Addressing the needs of this student population and implementing targeted interventions will be crucial for improving the school's performance and providing equitable educational opportunities for its students.

Open Quote Terrible school! There is little to no, mostly no parent teacher communication. They are teaching my child the exact same things he already learned last year in kindergarten at a way better school. If you ever decide to go to the open house at the beginning of the year or any other after school type of program you will have to listen to every word be repeated again in spanish because no one there speaks any english. They have no year books and no awards for students at the end of the year, and the teachers seem extremely lazy as well. There was a day that I was walking to the front to pick my child up after school and spotted a NEEDLE just laying in the grass so I mentioned it to one of the pre k teachers there she did not seem to care what so ever, that was three weeks ago and that needle is still there but has moved and now has the cap off, so that means some child probably picked it up and took off that protective cap. They dont have any concern for your childs safety what so ever obviously, after school first started I witnessed a teacher let a child leave with some meth head that even told the teacher she didnt know this kids name but "was suppose to be picking them up". Absolutely absurd to think they would even let a child leave the school with some random crack head that dosent even know the childs name, from that day on I always make sure im there a few minutes earlier to pick my child up. So what am I trying to say? I guess my point would be that if you care about your child getting a quality education in a safe environment then avoid this school, unless you just dont care. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
