Phenix City Intermediate School

Summary:

Phenix City Intermediate School is a public middle school serving 1,044 students in grades 6-7 in Phenix City, Alabama, which is part of the Phenix City School District. The school has a diverse student population, with a majority of African American students and significant percentages of White and Hispanic students. However, Phenix City Intermediate School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Alabama middle schools, with below-average proficiency rates in Mathematics and English Language Arts.

Despite these academic challenges, Phenix City Intermediate School performs better in certain student subgroups compared to the overall school performance. For example, the school ranks in the top 30% of Alabama middle schools for English Language Learners and Special Education students. This suggests that the school may have effective programs and support systems in place for these populations. In comparison, the nearby South Girard School outperforms Phenix City Intermediate School, while the more distant Russell County Middle School is outperformed by Phenix City Intermediate in some academic areas.

The high percentage of students (around 80%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch at Phenix City Intermediate School indicates a significant level of economic disadvantage among the student population. This socioeconomic challenge likely contributes to the school's overall academic performance, and suggests that the school may need to allocate additional resources and support to address the needs of its economically disadvantaged students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Although my child did very well in PCIS, this school certainly has its challenges. If your a parent like me, who stays on their children academically, then your child will succeed no matter where he or she goes to school. But I give this school 3 stars, solely because they are doing their best. They just got a new Principle, then you have teachers leaving in the middle of the school year, and if that isnt bad enough, this is the only middle school in this area. With these kind of challenges, you have to cut the school some slack. For whatever reasons all these things are happening within this school, its no wonder the tests scores are at an all time low. One great thing is they are BIG on reading. In that area, their tests scores soared! Now if they can put as much emphasis on their math program as they did their reading - then Im sure the test scores would improve greatly. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
