South Lamar School

Summary:

South Lamar School is an alternative public school serving 604 students in grades PK-12 in Millport, Alabama, a predominantly White community. This school consistently outperforms the Lamar County and Alabama state averages in key academic areas, particularly in mathematics and English language arts.

South Lamar School's students demonstrate strong proficiency in mathematics, with 75.93% and 72.09% of 3rd and 4th graders, respectively, meeting or exceeding standards compared to just 42.16% and 38.32% statewide. The school also excels in science, with 4th and 8th grade students scoring higher than the county and state averages. Additionally, 75.56% of 6th graders are proficient in English language arts, surpassing the 53.32% state average. Despite serving a population with greater economic challenges, as indicated by the high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, South Lamar School spends more per student than the nearby Lamar County HighIntermediate School.

The consistent academic performance of South Lamar School suggests that the school is effectively supporting student learning and achievement, even in the face of socioeconomic challenges. While the school outperforms the county and state in many areas, there are a few grade levels and subjects, such as 11th grade mathematics and English language arts, where proficiency rates lag behind. Identifying and addressing the root causes of these lower-performing areas could help the school continue to improve and provide an exceptional educational experience for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Great school. Lots of opportunity for growth. Students that want to learn are given ample opportunity. Those that don't are in every school. My incredibly shy child really came out of her shell and blossomed here. Close Quote

Open Quote The school is very poor, with broken down and aged equipment. Though some with great abilities, students are often pulled down by those who desire to 'make a scene'. Speaking from personal experience, the teachers hardly have control over the volume in the classes. There are far too many students and not enough teachers to control the level. Thirty three teachers and over five hundred students in the minature community created.
Even with five hundred students, there are no clubs or after school events that do not deal with sports or high level academics. There is no 'anime club', 'sports club', or even a 'library club'. The most that can be found is the rarely active newspaper club.
Technologically, we are behind most schools. Some schools will let students work on laptops, iPads, or even computers set up in rooms. Cellphones could be used as a way to learn. There is so much potential in the technology, but so little chance to express and use it. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
